Rigorous luminosity function determination in presence of a background: theory and application to two intermediate redshift clusters ⋆ ABSTRACT In this paper we present a rigorous derivation of the luminosity function (LF) in presence of a background. Our approach is free from the logical contradictions of assigning negative values to positively defined quantities and avoid the use of incorrect estimates for the 68 % confidence interval (error bar). It accounts for Poisson fluctuations ignored in previous approaches and does not requires binning of the data. The method is extensible to more complex situations, does not require the existence of an environment–independent LF, and clarifies issues common to field LF derivations. We apply the method to two clusters of galaxies at intermediate redshift (z ∼ 0.3) with among the deepest and widest K s observations ever taken. Finally, we point out shortcomings of flip–flopping magnitudes.

The aim of the present work is detection of galaxy clusters based on weak gravitational lensing method. We apply mass aperture statistics method to 0.32 square degrees data obtained with the WFI@MPG/ESO 2.2 m telescope and detect mass peaks based on their mass not the luminosity. So by the application of proper filter function, shear profile and mass map are produced. Finally mass peaks with hi...

The Red Sequence Luminosity Function in Massive Intermediate Redshift Galaxy Clusters

We measure the rest-frame B-band luminosity function of red-sequence galaxies (RSLF) of five intermediate-redshift (0.5 < z < 0.9), high-mass (σ > 950 km s) clusters. Cluster galaxies are identified through photometric redshifts based on imaging in seven bands (five broad, and two narrow) using the WIYN 3.5m telescope. The luminosity functions are well-fit down to M B + 3 for all of the cluster...

The buildup of stellar mass and the 3 . 6 μ m luminosity function in clusters from z = 1 . 25 to z = 0

The buildup of stellar mass and the 3.6 µm luminosity function in clusters from z = 1.25 to z = 0.2. Abstract. We have measured the 3.6 µm luminosity evolution of about 1000 galaxies in 32 clusters at 0.2 < z < 1.25, without any a priori assumption about luminosity evolution, i.e. in a logically rigorous way. We find that the luminosity of our galaxies evolves as an old and passively evolving p...

Qso Environments at Intermediate Redshifts

We have made a survey of quasar environments at 0.5 ≤ z ≤ 0.8, using a sample of both radio-loud and radio-quiet quasars matched in B-band luminosity. Our observations include images of background control fields to provide a good determination of the field galaxy counts. About 10 per cent of the quasars appear to live in rich clusters, whereas approximately 45 per cent live in environments simi...

Velocity of galaxies with different luminosity

We present the first determination of the pairwise velocity dispersion of galaxies at different luminosity with the final release of the Two-Degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS). Our result surprisingly shows that the random velocities of the faint galaxies are very high, around 700 km s −1 , reaching similar values as the brightest galaxies. At intermediate luminosities slightly bright...
